Adobe Dreamweaver is the starting point of study for almost all web designers. It is probably the most utilised web-development platform globally. For commercial applications you'll need a full understanding of the entire Adobe Web Creative Suite. This is including (but is by no means restricted to) Action Script and Flash. Should you desire to become an Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) or Adobe Certified Professional (ACP) then these skills are paramount.
Let's face it: There's no such thing as personal job security anymore; there can only be industry or sector security - companies can just remove anyone when it suits the company's commercial needs. Security only exists now via a fast increasing market, fuelled by a shortfall of trained staff. These circumstances create the right background for a higher level of market-security - a much more desirable situation.
The IT skills-gap across the UK clocks in at over 26 percent, as shown by the most recent e-Skills analysis. Or, to put it differently, this means that the country can only find three qualified staff for every four jobs available now. Well qualified and commercially certified new employees are as a result at a resounding premium, and it looks like they will be for much longer. For sure, now really is such a perfect time for retraining into the IT industry.
So many training providers only concern themselves with gaining a certificate, and completely miss the reasons for getting there - getting yourself a new job or career. Your focus should start with where you want to get to - don't make the journey more important than where you want to get to. Don't let yourself become part of that group who set off on a track that seems 'fun' or 'interesting' - and get to the final hurdle of an accreditation for something they'll never enjoy.
Set targets for earning potential and whether you're an ambitious person or not. Usually, this will point the way to which accreditations you'll need to attain and what industry will expect from you in return. Talk to someone that has a commercial understanding of the realities faced in the industry, and could provide detailed descriptions of what to expect in that role. Researching these areas well before commencement of any study path makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?
We can guess that you're a practical sort of person - the 'hands-on' person. Usually, the trial of reading reference books and manuals is something you'll force on yourself if you absolutely have to, but it's not really your thing. You should use video and multimedia based materials if book-based learning really isn't your style. Learning psychology studies show that long term memory is improved when all our senses are involved, and we get physically involved with the study process.
The latest audio-visual interactive programs featuring instructor demo's and practice lab's will beat books every time. And they're a lot more fun to do. Always insist on a study material demo' from the training company. The materials should incorporate expert-led demonstrations, slideshows and lab's for you to practice your skills in.
It doesn't make sense to choose training that is only available online. Connection quality and reliability varies hugely across the ISP (internet service provider) market, it makes sense to have disc based courseware (On CD or DVD).
Be watchful that any certifications you're working towards will be commercially viable and are up-to-date. 'In-house' exams and the certificates they come with are not normally useful in gaining employment. To an employer, only the big-boys like Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco or Adobe (for instance) will get you into the interview seat. Anything less won't make the grade.
An effective package of training will have accredited simulation materials and exam preparation packages. Confirm that the practice exams haven't just got questions from the right areas, but ask them in the same way that the proper exam will formulate them. This can really throw some people if they're faced with unrecognisable phrases and formats. Always request some practice exams in order to test your understanding whenever you need to. Simulations of exams log the information in your brain - so the real thing isn't quite as scary.
